Habits drive our behaviors and can be our best friends or our worst enemies. Some of us can be addicted to our smart phones, emails, Facebook feeds, TV, shopping and even some self-destructive habits such as smoking, drugs, overeating and alcohol.
In this class, we will explore the physiology and psychology of addiction as described in Judson Brewer’s book, “The Craving Mind”. Judson Brewer developed a smoking cessation program that was more effective than the previous gold standard treatments..
We will cover the Buddhist concept of dependent origination. One could see this as an early description of the addiction process and the wisdom in the four noble truths as an antidote. We will do guided meditations that help us cultivate the awareness and mental discipline needed to free ourselves from our habitual patterns. Our lunch will be a chance to practice one of the skills of mindfulness.
